Organ Profiles for Late Summer: Spleen & Stomach

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, there are five primary elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) that correspond with the five seasons (Spring, Summer, Late Summer, Fall/Autumn, and Winter), as well as certain systems and qualities, such as organs, tissues, emotions and colors.

Paying attention to these throughout the year can help cultivate increased balance (yin and yang) within the body, mind and spirit. The following organ profiles feature the key LATE SUMMER organs: spleen (yin) and stomach (yang).

Spleen (The Storeroom of Chi)

The spleen is in charge of digestion, blood production, and the conversion of nutrients into life force energy or CHI. It stores blood and turns over old red blood cells. The spleen also consists of lymphatic tissue and as such, offers a protective quality for the body. The pancreas is associated with the spleen in TCM, thus is connected with converting food to energy through regulation of the body’s use of glucose.

Stomach (The Guardian of Energy)

The stomach, a rather sensitive organ, is given the task of “digesting” things. This can relate to assimilating various foods, as well as stressful events and emotions. Mulling over things excessively and being in a state of mental anguish taxes digestion and absorption in the stomach. When you are stressed, one of the first physiological responses is diminished hydrochloric acid production, reducing your ability to break down your food properly and often creating heartburn. Use exercise and meditation as a way to keep your digestive system in good working order by staying out of your head and releasing stress.
