Castor Oil: An Old Remedy with New Results

I’ve always loved the mysterious healing powers of castor oil.

To start with, Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), intuitive healer and ORIGINAL medical medium, used castor oil to treat virtually every ailment. He touted that castor oil could clear issues that traditional medical methods could not. In fact, in over the 1800 patients he cared for, every single one of them received castor oil packing!

Castor oil had healing roots before Cayce as well. It is mentioned in early Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic texts as a potent healing treatment, and the Bible mentions it as an anointing oil by Jesus.

Castor Oil "packing" and its benefits

The process of castor oil “packing” belongs to Cayce. He developed a process done over the liver and abdomen involving the oil, flannel, and compression with heat. He documented hundreds of cases of radical healing of conditions from digestive problems to skin disorders and chronic disease. His basic idea was that castor oil balanced the body through the penetration of the oil into the tissues, which stimulated lymphatic flow and reduced inflammation via the Peyer’s patches.

You can imagine my interest when my Mom, who works for the National Cancer Registry, mentioned that Yale University was doing a medical study about castor oil! It is being studied to reduce neuropathy in the feet—and successfully.

As I researched some more on what mechanism is reducing the nerve pain, the consistent theory matches up with Cayce. The castor oil is hydrolyzed in the small intestine, leading to the release of RNA, glycerol, and other metabolites that balance the nervous system, move lymphatics and reduce inflammation.

Add castor oil to your next Body|Work session

After reading the research and recalling my affinity for castor oil, the next step was (obviously!) to start offering it as a service through my in-studio Body|Work sessions

Packing can now be done to the feet or joints, as well as the traditional Cayce method, over the liver and abdomen to reduce inflammation and encourage lymph flow. Castor oil can also be used as the massage oil to relieve pain, numbness, and tingling.

You can add Castor Oil Packing to your Body|Work session for $20 (focusing the pack on 1-2 areas) or choose a 30-minute mini-balance and tuning fork session (packing 2-3 areas) for $50. Call or text me today to experiencing the healing power of castor oil!

Of course, you can benefit from the healing powers of castor oil on your own!

To make your own castor oil pack, you’ll need the following:

  • Castor oil (I recommend Heritage Store Organic Castor Oil for Edgar Cayce’s specifications)
  • Flannel (wool or cotton)
  • Medium bowl
  • Plastic sheet (plastic wrap or garbage bag cut to size)
  • Heat source (hot pad, hot water bottle, hot towels)

Directions:

  • Cut the flannel into strips or smaller squares depending on where you’ll use them.
  • Use at least 4 pieces of cloth to make a pack.
  • Pour castor oil into a bowl deep enough that you can completely soak a piece of flannel in it.
  • Saturate the flannel strips in the oil and apply directly to the desired area of skin by laying the strips one on top the other, until you have layered each cloth.
  • Cover the flannel pack with a similar size piece of plastic wrap and apply gentle compressions to the area for about 1 minute.
  • Add the heat source for 15 – 30 minutes, continuing to gently compress the area occasionally.
  • Feel the level of relaxation your body is experiencing and see if you notice the sense of deeper healing occurring!
